Exploding video in 3D space

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Yes, this story is as fun as the heading sounds.

Craftymind.com has an amazing demonstration of HTML5 video effects in newer browsers. If you have Safari or Opera, it will look especially good; Firefox, apparently it’s a bit stuttery, and I have no idea about Internet Explorer. In any case, check out the ‘Blowing apart fragments of video’ (click on the picture half way down the page to watch the video).

For the non-technically minded, the two video effect demonstrations use standard web browser features, from the new version of HTML (version 5) — the basic building block of web pages. This means these amazing effects and many others will be more accessible for a wider range of web designers, so you’ll see them used on more websites. Also, because they use just HTML, such effects will work on a large variety of web browsers, including mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad.

Website launched

Just completed gillianredwood.com, an artist’s website with a fun combination of scriptaculous, lightbox2, prototype, and a smattering of PHP. (Non-techie version: lots of coding to make the gallery look flashy and to stop people sending spam with the contact page.)

Check it out.

This Week in Tech logoStrongly recommend TWiT, This Week in Tech… informative, funny, warming podcast every week about all things tech, with some interesting guests. Has been my tech nourishment for a couple of years now, and far beats the negativity of trawling dry tech news websites.
