iTunes store non-deal of the century

Monday, April 19th, 2010

In another example of the iTunes Store needing to be reined in, here’s the amazing UK promotion for £5 movies:

A large "Films under £5" heading on the iTunes store, but no films listed below it.

Hmm. There… er… aren’t any.

It’s a large store with amazing content, but it’s sprawling out of control with generic structures and poor management.

Apple and Flash: an analogy

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Apple wants to kill Flash the same way you want to kill the wasp that’s flying around the fruit bowl. You don’t hate the wasp per se, you just don’t want to get stung by surprise whilst serving the cantaloupe.

Chaplin

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Away from the tech for a second: This sums up how I sometimes feel in my life, on many levels.

Charlie Chaplin standing in a crowded bar on his own, back to the camera, with one hand on hip and other hand holding his cane.

Chaplin was a genius.

We’re going proofread this carefully

BBC News top story on March 20th:

‘ Urging them to back the measure in a House vote expected on Sunday, [President Obama] said: “We’re going to this done.” ‘

Um… I don’t think he did. Come on guys! I’ve seen tons of similar mistakes on the BBC News website in recent months, and it makes my ‘grr’ detector go berserk.

Update: The President has gone back in time and changed what he said. Multi-talented man. The story now reports: ‘ Urging them to back the measure in a House vote expected on Sunday, he said: “Let’s get this done.” ‘

It’s not about the tablet, stupid

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Stained glass window of Moses carrying two stone tablets.

One possible mockup of the rumoured Apple tablet.

Rumors abound that Apple will be introducing a tablet in late January.

But yet again, the industry focuses on the hardware, without any consideration of what you might actually do with it. That would make the predictions more interesting (and likely accurate)!

How will it fit into people’s lives? What compelling new interaction can you do with something tablet-like in form factor and functionality — in the home, and in the office? What would make someone arrive in an Apple store and say, “that’s what I need in my life”?

Instead, people are fixated on specifications. OLED. Cameras. Chips. Form factors. These are mere details! Apple will be rubbing their hands with magician-reveal glee that no one is giving the use of the tablet any airtime.

Expect a raft of content announcements and demonstrations to accompany the tablet, in whatever form it takes.
